— A —

Anodize – The process that creates a protective hard oxide film on the surface of aluminum

Annealed – Standard glass created by a heating and cooling process to relieve stress, add toughness, and reduce brittleness. This is NOT tempered.

Arch top – A unit shaped like a tombstone, has a smooth curve where the head and jambs meet.

Astragal – A type of panel or door jamb, which has a keeper to accept the lock plunger of another panel or door meeting on the same track or threshold.

Bore – The holes made in a door rim into which the door handle or dead bolt fits. Also referred to as the Prep.

Box screen – A heavy duty screen rolled in to the frame of a Sliding Glass Door instead of glass. Rides on its own track and not the screen rail.

Buck dimension – Buck width or height; the dimension of the window (not including flange or fin) that directly fits into the buck opening.

Buck opening – Opening with buck strips installed and ready for window and door installation. Also referred to as finished opening.

Colonial Configuration – Window and door style in which vents or panels are divided into small sections (lites) by adding muntins.

Commodity – Standard sizes developed for Florida Construction in accordance to block sizes. Most commonly used in the masonry trade.

Configuration – Describes the setup of panels or vents on windows and doors: For example: OX, XO, XOX or XX

— D —

DGK (Double Applied Grill Kit) – lay in grill kit; made of the raised muntin on the exterior and flat bar on the inside.

Daylight Opening (DLO) – The visible area; glass to glass dimension of a window or door (what you can see).

— E —

Egress Opening – A clear opening big enough to escape through. Has a very specific minimum clear opening in width and height. Check your local building codes.

E.S.P.- Electrostatic Paint – painting process used to paint aluminum extrusions – the metal is charged negatively and the paint positively to enable total coverage of the surface.

Extrusion – The material used to make windows and doors. Formed into shape by heating and forcing through a steel plate.

— F —

Fixed Vent – a non-operable window or door panel. An operable vent or panel that is secured in the closed position. The fixed vent window or panel is not died for locks or operators.

Flange Frame – A window frame extrusion, which adds ½” to all four sides of the daylight opening on an aluminum window.

Flush Bolt – Used on a French Door. It goes on top and bottom of the astragal and secures the inactive door to the header and threshold. Also known as a Slide Bolt or Throw Bolt.

Frame – The enclosure in which a window sash or door panel is mounted. Consist of header, sill and 2 jambs.

— G —

Glazing – Glass or other material that is placed into a window or door sash, or the process of installing this material.

Glazing bead – A molding or stop placed around a window to cover the glass edge. Can be aluminum or plastic.

— H —

Header – The upper horizontal member of the main frame of a door, or a window frame.

— I —

Integral Fin – Nailing fin protruding from the extrusion that is part of the extrusion (as opposed to an add-on fin). Is centered on window (front to back) and extends 1-1/8” beyond the window measurement.

— J —

Jamb – A window or door frame’s vertical member. There would be two on the main frame.

— L —

Large missile impact – Test used on windows and doors in which a 9 lbs 2x4 traveling at 50 ft per second is propelled at a speed of 34 mph into test subject.

Low E glass – Transparent coating applied to glass surface to separate heat energy (long wave) and light energy (short wave) – long wave is reflected back to the heat source and the short wave can pass through the coating.

— M —

Masonry Opening – Actual block opening – not including the buck strips.

Modular – Size in width and height are given in feet and inches to even sizes. Some modular sizes use a combination of modular width and commodity heights.

Mullion / Mull – Extrusion that connects two or more windows together in a single opening.

Mull Clip – A clip designed to anchor a tube mullion in an opening.

Multi-point Lock – A lock with multiple locking points. Typically to the head and sill, jamb or astragal.

Muntin – Exterior and interior extrusions or wood in the sash of a window or door which appear to divide the glass into smaller lites.

— N —

Nailing Fin – Metal or vinyl strips used for nailing window or doors into bucked opening. Obscure – White interlayer in between two layers of glass allows for privacy.

— O —

Operator – The crank or handle that is used to open a window. On the window, we need to know left or right as viewed from the inside looking out.

Oriel – Another name for Pro-view window. Fixed section of a single hung that is approximately 2/3 of the window.

Outswing – A term used on doors that swing to the outside or exterior of the home. Is viewed from the outside for hinging.

— P —

Panel – An assembly of stiles and rails made into a frame for holding glass. Used when referring to a movable portion of a door.

Prep – Used in reference to holes that get bored or punched on a French door. Retrofit – Window or door replacement, change out or remodel.

— S —

Sash – An assembly of stiles and rails made into a frame for holding glass. Used when referring to a movable portion of a window.

Sill – The main horizontal member forming the bottom of the frame of a window or door.

Slab – The actual door of a French door or Cabana door; also known as a Panel.

Slide Bolt – see Flush Bolt.

Stile – The main vertical member of the framework on a panel.

Striker Plate – Metal piece with a punched hole on the frame jamb or astragal, which accepts the lock plunger.

Square Foot – Multiply width by height (in inches) and divide by 144.

Swing – The term used with a door or casement window in regards to which way the door or window opens or swings (in or out).

— T —

Three point Lock – A 3-piece lock with connecting bar to the deadbolt and top and bottom of door that goes into the header and sill of the door frame, locking in three points. Used on French doors.

Throw-bolt – see Flush Bolt.

Tinted – Glass with color is a tinted glass.

Tip-to-Tip – Measurement for windows, which is taken from the outside of the flange to the outside of the flange.

Transom – A small window that fits over a door or window. It can be radius or square top.

— V —

Vent – A part of a window that opens or operates (moves).

— W —

Washable Hinge – A hinge that will slide over enabling you to wash the outside of a casement window. A release key is required to unlock the hinge on the head and sill.

Weather Stripping – Vinyl, rubber or wool pile strips used in doors and windows to diminish or prevent air, water, and insect infiltration.
